This piece actually has a model and inspiration, I was really into this Fred Hersch album at the time called Songs without words, and specifically the recording of his composition "Aria". I borrowed some things from that piece to write my own, namely the way he comps for himself during the statement of the melody with highly syncopated chord stabs.

To me, Hansel and Gretel is the most cinematic of these three songs. in the beginning, the melody enters with a very explorative feel to it, an excitement and curiosity. Those emotions slowly transition into more complex feelings of confusion, fear, and eventual overwhelm.

There is some imagery and emotion I associate with the music, including being a small child and running through tall grass, experiencing a grand fear, and a deep sadness.
