about

This piece has a stark uniqueness to it. I was engaged once and we lived together in a very old and petite house in San Luis Obispo, near the downtown area and across Pismo street from a large park. We had a baby grand piano in the dining area of the house, which greedily ate up a huge portion of that room, the kind of privilege only beautiful things are afforded. I played that piano more often than anyone and I have many fond memories of it being my partner while exploring technique and harmony.

My favorite time of day to play was always in the late afternoon--I'm not sure exactly why, but I think it has something to do with the color of the sunlight for those three or so hours, about 2-5pm. As the sun set over the house, a few narrow rays of dark yellow and brownish-golden light exposed all the dust that was constantly floating in the air in that old, tiny house on Pismo street. One of these sessions inspired the dark chorale-esque melodies in this piece. To be candid, it is important to mention that this material started as an improvisation, which was inspired by the feeling of sitting at this piano at this time of day in that room. It is special to me that I can think of this melody and immediately see in my mind's eye, the very color of the light that day, and the way the dust floated and swirled around in the narrow rays that came through the windows on the other side of the dinner table.
